Fix Your Pinky! Guitar Pinky Training & Exercises

by David Osborn, M.S.

Playing Level: Beginner / Intermediate

Does your pinky utterly fail you when you try to use it? Do you tend to avoid using it at all costs? If so, you are likely suffering from "Pinky Avoidance Syndrome". Pinky Avoidance Syndrome is very common--especially amongst beginner and early intermediate guitar players.

If left unchecked, the tendency to avoid using the pinky will lead to significant long-term problems in your guitar playing. In fact, there are two primary problems with the tendency to avoid using the pinky:

  1. 1
There are many things that are not possible to play without the use of the pinky.
  2. 2
There are numerous instances where using the pinky makes what you're playing far easier than not using the pinky.

Not to mention that a pinky that works well inevitably leads to faster and more accurate guitar playing! In the above lesson, I'll show you the fastest path to developing a strong and highly coordinated pinky. Here are a few things that we will cover:

  • The two things that are at the root of your "pinky problems" (and how to correct them).
  • The three "Pinky Combo Exercises" that will fast-track your pinky development.
  • How to identify when to use your pinky so that you can start using it as much as possible.
  • The four instances where it's okay to substitute other fingers in place of the pinky.

Developing coordination in the pinky can be an absolute game changer for your playing! Apply the tips and exercises in the lesson above and you will be sure to see very positive changes in your playing in a short period of time!
